Job Description

Description

Leidos currently has an opening for a Systems Engineer Lead to support design, development, and implementation of space based sensors for our customers at Leidos’ San Diego offices. As a Systems Engineer Lead, you will work closely with the Chief Engineer, Signal Processing Engineers, Software Engineers, and Integration and Test Engineers, to design, and develop, capabilities for sensors used in space. You will manage a team of system engineers to develop an analysis of alternatives, the concepts of operations, use cases, requirements, and other system-level specifications.

The candidate will utilize MBSE Digital Engineering (DE) software application to develop sensor architectures modeled in UML artifacts and collectively assist and describe MBSE sensor designs to the team of engineers for the development of space sensor capabilities. Additional responsibilities include managing and employing system engineering methodologies for the implementation of design sensor components, designing MBSE models and artifacts, applying and executing SE processes and tools, accomplishing requirements analysis, problem diagnosis and solution design, integration and test preparation, risk assessment and mitigation planning, and related activities.

Primary Responsibilities

This position will be responsible for supporting systems engineering activities for space systems and sensors within a digital engineering environment. Primary responsibilities will include managing a team of system engineers, supporting requirements, decomposing high-level requirements, verification requirements management, integration and interface activities, documentation of design and development plans, decomposing and developing test requirements, defining technical performance metrics, and developing test artifacts for the execution of testing.

Some additional responsibilities of systems engineers include:

  • Lead the development of system engineering architecture and design of sensor applications and programs.
  • Develop sensor architectures as they map to low-level algorithms between hardware, firmware, flight software, and ground software.
  • Participate in development phases from detailed requirements flow down, trade studies, processing architecture design, hardware selection, firmware and software development, sensor and payload integration and test, spacecraft integration and test, and on-orbit support.
  • Actively work with multi-domain team of engineers including software, firmware, electrical, optical, and test engineers to coordinate system design efforts across multiple programs, including embedded software, ground support software, and test equipment software.
  • Work closely with the chief engineer, electrical engineers, signal processing, mechanical, and test engineers, to convey sensor design architectural details, software message interactions process flows, software architectural design layout, hardware placement design, and firmware control interfaces,
  • Interface with technical management and execution of engineering activities requirements analysis, Implementation planning, integration and test, documentation, deployment, and system assessment.
  • Employ MBSE Digital Engineering approach for systems planning, design, execution, and operations.
  • Develop and maintain systems engineering documentation and diagrams/models through use of MBSE tool.
  • Define and employ simulation, and parametric diagram, capabilities within the MBSE DE.
  • Define and employ automated capabilities, including automated document generation, automated software stubs and skeleton capability, automated unit testing, and more.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience with leading a team of 5+ system engineers.
  • A solid system engineering understanding and experience leading a multi-faceted and varied team, to support multiple research and development projects.
  • A strong understanding of system engineering principles and system engineering processes.
  • Experience with decomposing high-level requirements.
  • Strong experience with No-Magic’s CAMEO System Modeler.
  • Experience developing use cases, simulation and parametric diagrams, and defining requirements.
  • Must have experience with 2 or more of the following areas: Requirements Management, Activity or Sequence Diagrams, Interface Diagrams, Producing Document from CAMEO, Risk Identification and Mitigation, and Supplier Management,
  • Strong confidence working with multi-domain engineers.
  • B.S. degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related engineering field and 5+ years of prior relevant experience or M.S. degree with 3+ years of prior relevant experience.
  • Secret clearance with the ability to obtain Top Secret Clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with and understanding of, modeling, design, assembly, integration, and test of complex systems
  • Experience with and understanding of sensor architecture as it pertains to hardware, firmware, and software.
  • Experience with and understanding of the Defense Acquisition Life Cycle process (e.g. Milestone A, B, & C, SRR, SFR, PDR, etc)
  • Understanding of space-based influences (e.g., curvature of the earth, clutter, etc) as it impacts sensor accuracies
  • Understanding of space-based sensor accuracies (e.g. Stare, Bias errors, Line of Sight errors, 3D localization accuracies, etc)
  • Understanding of different solutions for image processing algorithms.
  • Working experience SDA, MDA, AFRL, and Air Force space programs.
